William Blake The very first artists, at least those that we know of, likely explored a wide range of media. Certainly the cave paintings were done employing watercolor, the pigment being applied with brushes made of animal hair and twigs. They also used blowpipes to obtain effects similar to air-guns. Pigments likely were mixed with fats, as with oil paint, and with milk or egg for casein and tempera. Certainly they seemed anxious to try it all! Only photography and computer art are new. |
